Devonport Community Workshop
Our Story
In 1986, a group of far-sighted councillors together with five retired public-spirited tradesmen (mainly ex-naval base) negotiated to use the historic Claystore building as a community workshop.
The Deputy Mayor at the time, also a lecturer in Town Planning at Auckland University, arranged to have students from the Architectural School construct the top section of the Claystore using recycled materials, creating a covered and secure workshop area.
Tools for the workshop were gradually acquired over the years, some being surplus from the Navy, some donated while others are on permenant loan.
For the past 37 years, volunteers have manned the Devonport Community Workshop six mornings a week through out the year. The workshop is open to anyone and a volunteer will always be on hand to help if required. Although carpentry is our main activity, we also have welding and metal working equipment available.
